How this works

Teams are paired first against last: the top seed meets the bottom one, the second meets the second-bottom, and so on, so the two strongest can only meet in the final. If the number of teams is not a power of two the shortfall becomes byes, and the best-placed teams are the ones who skip the first round — which is what a real cup does with an awkward entry list. Every later round is shown with its slots empty, so the shape of the competition is visible before a ball is kicked.

Questions

What if I do not have a power of two?
That is the normal case, and it is handled: the field rounds up to the next power of two and the difference becomes byes. Six teams in an eight bracket means two teams skip the first round.
Who gets the byes?
The teams highest in the list you enter. Enter them in seeded order — strongest first — and the seeding does the rest.
How many matches is a knockout?
Always one fewer than the number of teams, because every match eliminates exactly one. 16 teams is 15 matches, byes or no byes.
Why is the first round called the quarter-final when only four teams play?
The round is named after the bracket, not the turnout. Six teams in an eight bracket are playing quarter-finals — two of them without kicking a ball.

Run it as a real competition

This is the same fixture engine Dawrify uses. In the app the schedule comes with live scoring, a standings table that sorts itself, player statistics, matchday graphics and a public page for every team — and the fixtures are the ones you just generated.
